So these are common things, thanks for sharing such a great information here, I am glad to know about these and all common mistakes happened in our everyday use.

I started up my tank without checking if the overflow hose was in the refugium. It was hanging free over the floor of the stand and it soaked my brand new stand. Also, I bought a dragon wrasse for my reef without checking its compatibility and aggressiveness. I sold an eel for it thinking i would be able to get cleaner shrimp and come home with a crustacean killer. :/

yeah i would ship him out if i could...He knocks over coral , stirs up dust, and kills the CUC. Also, i can't get cleaners b/c of him.

Biggest mistake I made was my snowflake eel. everyone told us we couldn't have an eel, they werent reef safe. we were only just starting to get fish and all I wanted was an eel. i thought they were so pretty and graceful. Finally, one of our lfs told us "I have one of these guys (snowflake) in my reef..go for it!!" we bought him right on the spot. without researching!! everything was fine for a while. then he ate our clown goby. then the firefish, then he attacked one of my blue reef chromis that i had just purchased. spent a pretty penny on the trio. so losing one was devistating. then we bought a tilefish. who was about as big as the eel so we didnt see a problem. the tilefish lasted 1 hour. we decided the eel needed his own tank. so we set up the 29g. after 2 months cycle and 4 hours of trying to catch the little bugger, he jumped a week later through a small hole for the filter. he was a jerk..but i cried. i loved him even though he cost me $200 in damages.
in conclusion. i will never buy another fish without researching until my eyes bleed.

my biggest mistake was buying a eel ate 450$ of fish then i had to take my tank apart 4 times to get the dam thing.

its a lot more difficult than it sounds to catch an eel. they are very smart and stealthy. i gave it two tries and recruited 4 other men to help before i got him. it was a project and a half to say the least.

Every try a piece of PVC pipe? Once he goes in it cap the end? I have seen LFS keep PVC in the tank just to make it ease to catch them.

yes he knew what i was doing. he couldnt be out smarted. it was by pure luck that i eventually caught him.

My biggest mistake was with a new 75 gal freshwater tank. It was in the 70s and "good" water had to be bought in milk style gal jugs. Wasn't going to do that so the plan was to fill it with a hose and dose it, adding several days of filtering it before adding fish. Brought the hose in and started filling. Got it about 3/4 full when the wife called saying that she had been in a car wreck, and was at the hospital. I grabbed my coat and out the door I went. We were there for about 5 hours, and then I was up all night, the rug was ruined and, needless to say, the wife not happy.

Totally forgot about this thread.
My worst mistake by far was not buying a house that could accommodate a 6' tank .
