Matts biocube

So I figured I might as well start this out.

I have never had a tank before, but this looked interesting so figured I'd jump in.

So far I have all the equipment I plan to use at the moment, it's a 29g biocube, I got the intank media rack and CPE and purigen for that. 22lbs of reefrock, and a bag of live sand that has yet to go in. I got a 6 stage RODI system from BRS.

I've had all this sitting around for about 4 months, bc I got sent out of town on business and will be on vacation after Christmas. I hope to get everything started mid-January.

As far as livestock, right now I'm thinking a clown, I'd like to do a dwarf angle or something like that but it might be a bit small for them...and I'll probably do some easier coral after a few months, so compatibility might be an issue.

Started the tank up just over 3 weeks ago and ammonia and nitrite both dropped to 0 yesterday. Everything looks good, will head to the store tomorrow and get some cleanup crew. Thinking just a few snails and maybe a shrimp at the point. I cannot see any algae at all though, so I suppose I will have to feed them...

Am I supposed to take the remaining deli shrimp out before adding livestock? Or just leave it and let the cleanup crew take care of it?

Congrats on completing the cycle, you can remove or leave the remaining shrimp, once you add a cuc it will be gone over night...

It's been a while, but figured I should update this...things were going pretty well, cuc was in along with a fire shrimp, followed by a clown fish a few weeks after. When I added the cleanup crew there was no algae at all, but after I added the fish, I got brown algea and some green hair, likely caused by me over feeding.

The clownfish seemed to be doing ok, it was never really eating that much, hence my over feeding, trying to get it to eat. But after a week it did start.

On to this morning. The fish died overnight. I will check my water when I get home, but ammonia was 0. I think what might have happened was it overheated, it was 81.5 when I checked it. I just changed 5 gallons on Saturday, so the rest of the water should be ok. That being said, it was swimming with its head slightly higher then the rest of his body at times, assumed this was normal, but maybe not...hopefully I can come up with an explanation before I replace it.

The fire shrimp is still fine btw.

So I left the tank fish less for a few days and replaced the clown with a six line wrasse on Sunday. It is being very aggressive towards my fire shrimp...but not the point of this update.

I think I may have figured out the problem with the other fish. After a few days, some white spots have appeared. Most apparent on the back fin, but covering a good portion of the body too. Could this be ich? Sorry about the picture, it's very active and difficult to get pictures.

I haven't quarantined anything, and I know that's not particularly good, but I don't have the space for it right now.

Well, it died today. So I guess that was it. I suppose I'll leave it fallow for a couple months with just the cleanup crew and decide then whether to try again.

So sorry for your loss- fingers crossed things work out next time. Most people would advise a quarantine tank. I didn't. I know there is ich in my main tank. Every few weeks my neon gobie gets some love from the other fish ( it eats parasites). My cleaner shrimp used to do the same service until I foolishly bought a hawk fish who hunts shrimp. I think my older fish have developed a degree of resistance to the parasites- new fish would still be at risk though.
Think carefully about the quarantine tank - it doesn't have to be very big.

It's been a while since I posted here, but figured I'd update...I did end up shutting down.

As spring came around things started to warm up and the tank was holding around 90f during the day. It wasn't even that hot outside yet, but I'm in an apartment and it tends to stay on the warm side year round. I did start the Ac and it didn't change much.

The tank was empty at the time, so nothing was effected by the swings.

At this point I just have to decide what I want to do, keep all the stuff and try again later, or sell it.
