major changes. how to keep from killing everything

my current tank is a very under stocked 90 gallon with crushed coral. we have sold our house and will be moving into an apartment while our new house is being built. i cannot put the 90 gallon in the apartment due to it's weight, and lack of room. my tank is very under stocked due our house being for sale and not wanting to kill my livestock (i was hoping to buy a house that the tank would fit in, but we couldn't find anything to suit our needs, so we are building). i have someone wanting to trade mine for a 39 gallon. while i have it torn down i'm going to replace the crushed coral with live sand. can i mix some of my coral in with the sand to keep my copepod population? what is the best way to transfer my live stock without over stressing? i am going to fill the 39 gallon with water from the 90, then do a 20% water change every three times three days apart, will this help keep the stress down?

looks like everything went without a problem,,, so far. the water is a little murky from everything getting stirred up, but not to bad. hopefully it will be clear enough to snap some pics of tomorrow.

Couldn't find a house you liked and the tank wouldn't fit so decided to build? Nice....Going bigger than 90 in the new home?
Doing a transfer is pretty sketchy huh? I stared at my 30g before transferring to my 90g for about a week before I moved on it.
Waiting for pictures.

may have encountered a problem... the water was still cloudy when my wife got home (not bad cloudy, but a little from the new sand) so she decided to help and put Accu-Clear in the tank. even though it says "freshwater use only" right on the bottle. she read the directions and that's it.... don't know what will happen with this stuff in my tank. can't find any info on what it does in salt water... :banghead: did a pretty large water change, hopefully that will save eveything.

the tank issue was just another reason to add to the list of things we didn't like about any of the houses for sale in the area we want. i already have it drawn in the plans were the new tank will be, including a closet behind it to put all the equipment :)
