It turns out that my dad's lab got an RODI unit.

Leaving the tank light off is working! There is hardly any red slime left.

So it appears your light is either too strong, on too long, or the spectrum is not correct. I would just use RODI water with a TDS less than 5.

I had no idea I was supposed to rinse frozen food!!!!

Depends on the frozen food.

Products that are chopped up and in cubes I don't rinse (e.g. Ocean Nutrition Formula Once frozen food).

Frozen whole krill, brine shrimp, and other types of chunked food should be rinsed. These tend to be packed and frozen with water that is super high in nutrients. I take some tank water to thaw it in, rinse in sink with tank water in a fine mesh fish net, and then squeeze as much liquid as possible out of it. Rinsing in RODI is better, I'm lazy and use tank water.

I turned the lights back on, and the red slime is coming back. I don't want to leave it off all the time because my Candy Cane coral needs light.​
