FED PROPERLY AND GETTING THE PROPER NUTRITION

I used these words in various posts and, in the future, the words will appear as a link to this post. Sometimes I just write that the fish is 'starving.' This quite often evokes an indignant response from the hobbyist. But it isn't meant to be an insult.

Hobbyists misunderstand what it means when it is written that their fish must be fed properly and receive the proper nutrition or that their fish is starving. When I ask them about this, the most response is that their, ‘Fish eats a lot’ or that their, ‘Fish is eating.’ The two responses have nothing to do with the concept of being fed properly or getting the proper nutrition.

It doesn’t matter how much a fish is eating. If it’s the wrong food, the food is not providing enough of or the right kinds of nutrition and the fish is not being properly fed.

Feeding properly means the fish is being fed the right kinds of food and in the right amount. You first determine through the Internet or literature what kind of fish you have: Herbivore, Carnivore, or Omnivore. Then you provide the sea foods the fish depends upon, and you provide that in the correct quantity. Add vitamin and fat supplements to these foods and the fish is then getting the proper nutrition and is being fed properly.

I wrote this very long post on fish nutrition to provide background and the information you need, once you determine what kind of fish you have:

and

If you skip down the first linked post (above) you’ll find comments about specific kinds of foods to use and to avoid, with clear reasoning given.

All the following are examples of a fish NOT being fed properly:
“My fish eats a lot and I feed it pellets and/or flake foods”
“My fish is eating brine shrimp”
“My fish is eating mysis and brine shrimp”
“I feed my fish [insert any land product name]”
“My Tang (over 3") won’t eat marine algae”
“I feed my fish only gut loaded brine shrimp”
“I feed my fish only [any one kind of food]”

There are many posts put up as stickies in this Forum which have to do with food, feeding, and nutrition. Please read them! :) Some of them include:
