HELP! Cloudy Water

Ive had cloudy water for a few days, and as days go by its getting worse. I have no suspended particles (I left a glass of it on the counter for a few hours and nothing settled to the bottom) so I suspect its a heterotrophic bacteria. What should I do? I was considering buying a UV sterilizer but not sure if that should my first course of action...suggestions???

How long has your tank been cycled?
Cloudy water is always a stage in the cycling process....

If this is a newly set up tank, this is usually a bacteria bloom and is considered normal. It will go away on it's own in a few days.

If this is an established tank, it's likely something died and is fouling the water. Remove the dead livestock, test for ammonia and nitrite and make water changes as needed to help get those readings down.

One other thing that can occur on new tanks is the the substrata used may contain fine dust and not settle out on it's own. Usually after the tank cycles, this will go away. This fine dust is usually picked up by the bacteria film that grows over everything in an aquarium.
