Blue throat trigger

Just got a young, male 2-3" Blue throat trigger from my LFS. 2 questions:

1. I can barely make out the coloring but have read he will become more colorful as he matures. When can I expect this to happen (months, years)?

2. Lots of people talk about their male-female pairs but I don't understand the benefit. Should I be looking for a female, and if so why?

Hello and welcome to RS :)

After about his first year the coloring should be fairly stable and the blue bib noticeable. Color is something that will depend on how well the fishes diet is and water quality.

There are some very good threads in the upper stickies on this page about nutrition and water quality:

As for a mate, that is not needed. It cannot hurt if you pair them up but not necessary.
