It depends...

What do you plan to keep in the system?
How large is the system? And how deep?
How will you aquascape the system?
Are you willing to tolerate dark areas in the system?

There is no hard fast rule. You can get some idea by looking at the specs, but your never going to know for sure until you actually install the lighting. This applies to just about any lighting your going to use.

A few general thoughts on Al hydras.

Unless you have a smaller tank your generally better off with the larger fixtures. They consume less power for the amount of light you get out of them.

Pendant fixtures like this tend to direct the light straight down. Note that the brightest areas are only in about an 18 to 24 inch square. This is why you usually want fixtures about that far apart across the length of the tank, especially if you want high light corals like SPS.

The Hydra HD's are the "latest and greatest" in the product line, and can do a few more tricks than the older Hydras. However, If you get a good price on the older ones, keeping in mind that you need a controller for then, get them. You'll still get great light.
