You can do this, but I have always found a canopy to be a pain and gets in the way when you want to service the tank. I much prefer to suspend the lighting with cables from the ceiling or from hangers that attach to the stand or tank.

owever a canopy is fine too, and might be desired if the tank is going in a more formal area of the home, or you need to keep kids and pets out of the tank.
