Hi SeaHag!!! We have a Dive forum here - did you see it? Hope you post a lot of your pics for us. With that many dives behind you, I'll bet you can keep us all happy looking at your pics for a long time. I'm a diver too, but I'm a wimp - warm water only. Anyway, welcome and how about starting a thread about your diving backround and trips?? We'd love it. I just came across a whole pack of dive pics, so I'm gonna be posting some too.

Well, David did spill the beans didn't he. :D Yes, I hold many, many specialty ratings along with Master Scuba Diver, SSI Dive Control Specialist and PADI Assistant Instructor.

And, no David, I did not post any of the Winners! I have only won or placed 7 times in the past 4 years, not very many in my book. I will post some winners later on.

Tankgirl ~ No I did not know there was a Dive forum here also. I am really new to this type of thing and have not wonder away from this thread. I have only been Warm Water Diving on two occassions both to Maui. I do not recommend the Hawaiian Island for the wonderful warm water marine life. The South Pacific Islands are much better. My love is the cold waters of California were the marine life is abundant and rich. I will have new photos to post at the end of June for all to see.

David ~ we all await the step-by-step photos to be posted over the weekend. :D (Mom)

As per David's request, I have uploaded the 7 winning underwater photographs taken for the years of 2000 and 2001. I did not compete for the past two years but will be competing in only one competition this year (May 29th). If I win anything, I will post it for all to see.

Thank you for the interest in the photos.

I hope David will have posted some photos by morning. :D

Ugh... what a looooooong night it's been. :D

I finally got started a little after 7pm, and just finished about 20 minutes ago. I've got a few pix to post, and then it's off to bed for me. :)

Anyway, we'll start off with a shot of the reef before the mass destruction begins...

The first thing I decided to tackle was cleaning out the stand and sump... just wanted to leave the critters in the tank as long as I could.

Next I plumbed my two holding tubs together, then took out all the corals and rocks.
I have a MJ-1200 powerhead pushing water from the coral/fish tub into the rock tub, which is then siphoned back into the fish/coral tub through the DIY U-tubes I had made for my overflow on the old tank... saved me from having to heat and aerate each tub.
There's also a separate MJ-1200 in each tub providing circulation.

Next is a shot of the reef without anything but fish in it... the poor clowns look so lonely without an anemone to hide in...
One funny thing... as I was removing the anemone rock from the tank, the female clown tried to stay in her anemone even after I pulled the rock from the water... she swam as hard as she could but was unable to stay in the anemone once it broke the water surface... :D

Here's the sandbed getting ready for removal... I was fairly surprised that it didn't have a sulfury smell to it... mostly just smelled like the beach at low tide.

And here's a shot of the what took me the longest... sifting the rubble out of the sandbed. The rubble is going in the new tank, and I'm discarding the old aragonite.
Oh what fun that was... at first I was going to use a collander to do the sifting, but realized that it would be a futile undertaking due to the hole spacing...
So... I made some custom sifters out of some old plastic jugs I had laying around... I say sifter's' because the first one I made had too large of holes in it, so I had to sift 65 lbs of sand twice... :columbo:
But... I was able to get the smaller rubble out the second time around, so it's all good. :D

I find that with the rubble in the sandbed I have a much higher survival rate with Astrea/Margarita/Turbo snails... when they fall over they'll actually pick up several pieces of rubble until their foot is heavy enough to 'right' themselves... so they're not as 'dumb' as we all think... ;)

You can see in the silver tub all the crap that came out of the sandbed... ugh! I even got a mouthful of it when starting a siphon on the tank... :bugout:

Well, I think that's it for tonight's installment... the good stuff starts tomorrow. :D

Dave, great pics! I can't take the excitement!

SeaHag, what cam are you using? Nikonos V here. I'm embarrassed - even Hawaii is too cold for me - S. Pacific or Carib for me! Your pics are incredibly beautiful. Thanks!!

David, you have done an awesome job. I am sure that you had some help with this project. :D

I hope you got some sleep, but up and at it big boy. We need to see the good stuff. lol

Tankgirl ~ The photos were shot with two different cameras. The first 6 with the Nik V and marcro lenses and the last with a housed Nikon F100 and the 105 lens. I am currently without an underwater setup, but my dive partner has three, so I borrow one when doing competitions. I still own the F100 for landscape photography, which I am currently doing. Thank you for asking. :)

I think we are all waiting for the evening addition to this thread. Hopefully, more photos of the NEW tank. :D

Hey SeaHag!

Dave so inspired me with his cube tank that I will have a smaller version of the same thing. Mine will be 2' x 2' x 2'. It goes into the building phase the end of next week.

I will be tearing down my tank in about an hour so I can take the fish, inverts, corals and LR back to the LFS in as short a time as possible. My son's friend who is a young kid is going to take my stand and tank Sunday.

Those are some awesome underwater shots and enjoyed seeing them. :)
