Sorry to say it but you should prepare for him to not make the night. If it’s ich or velvet he’s pretty far into it and I’d be concerned about others in your tank as it’ll spread fast

Typically, if you can count the white dots on the fish its usually Ich. However, if they are too numerous to count there's a good chance you are dealing with Velvet.

The red gills could be due to ammonia burn or the gills are overloaded with parasites. A 5 min FW dip will provide temporary relief: https://humble.fish/freshwater-dip/

Post dip, I would put him in a 5 gallon bucket with Methylene Blue: https://humble.fish/methylene-blue/

That's the best you can probably do until you setup a proper QT. However, the FW dip might kill him if he's already become too weak.

This shows the difference between ich (1st photo) and velvet (2nd photo) on a Hippo Tang:

Read Humbles link, copper power is what I use and it looks like there are some pre QT steps you can take.

what meds do you have available to you?

Good luck Luke. Humbles link has all the jnfo you need, hopefully your store has the meds.

If not, it’s good to get them to have on hand for the future.

What other fish do you have in the tank?

Unfortunately I have nothing to hand but will be at reefkeeper rugby waiting for it to open in the morning

You're in the UK? If so, Copper Power will be hard to find. But Cupramine is usually readily available and will get the job done for Velvet. Treat at 0.5 mg/L for 30 days. However, the dragonet likely will not survive treatment and should be rehomed to a LFS or something. All corals/inverts shall remain in the DT, and I would leave the DT fallow (fishless) for 76 days.

You’re going to need a tank twice the size of the 54L one you mentioned if you’re going to keep the fish out of your Display for 2+ months. Even at 30 gallons it’ll require a good bit of ammonia monitoring. Try to pick up some biospira or other bacteria in a bottle, you’ll need it to jump start the bio filter. Transfer nothing from your display and do the FW dip at a min before the switch
