While a full blown controller like an Apex is great to have, its of course not a requirement. Sometimes down the road it becomes more important to help protect our investment.

I do always reccomend a "controller" for your heater, these, like the Inkbird are cheap ($35) and would turn off your heater should it get stuck in the "on" position. All heaters will fail at some point.

Dosing only becomes relevant when normal water changes can not keep the MG,ALK and CA in the ranges and stable. And it can still be done by hand daily.

That being said, a doser both removes this daily tasks and enhances stability greatly, which of course is the key to a successful reef.

I would also reccomend an ATO to automate the task of adding back the water which has evaporated. Again, enhances stability.
