Sump

I am looking into making a sump although I’m worried about how the flow works. Do I need to have the exact amount of water going into the sump as out? Or does the pump leading out of the sump back into the tank just need to be faster so the sump doesn’t overflow? Or neither?

I would also add this to the sump information.

How large is your tank?

On smaller tanks a sump in often not cost justified. In other words the benefits gained are marginal compared to the cost involved. On large tanks, above 75 gal or so, a sump does a lot and is cheep compared to the rest of the system.

Your going to find plenty of areas to spend your money in the SW reef area. Do your best not to spend any you don't need to.

to answer your question. the return pump will decide how much water goes in & out of your sump. You just have to be sure the overflow used can handle this amount of water. it balances itself out.
