Hi everybody! :)
I'm Paola and I'm from Brescia, a city near Milan in the north.
I am in Santa Monica Filtration from May 2017 to September 2017.
In this period I have been meeting a lot of kind of fish and corals that I didn't knew before.
I am having a great time here in L.A. but I miss my home....
What's going on there? I'll tell you what's going on each week.

So let's start saying that italians love pets: according to the Italian Report 2016 edited by Eurispes, almost the half of population has a pet (43,3%), and maybe more than one.

Fish and turtles are in the third position (8,7%), behind dogs (60,8%) and cats (49,3%). Other categories are birds (5,4%), rabbits (5,2%), hamsters (3,1%) and exotic pets (2,1%).

ITALIAN MARINE PROTECTED AREAS

Today I'm going to talk about the natural areas where our beloved fish and sea creatures live.

As we know, Italy is a peninsula, so it is mostly surrounded by the Mediterranean sea that is populated with many species of plants and animals.

Italy has very good developed programs in the Mediterranean to protect special areas of the coast and sea. Nowadays it has 30 currently designated "sanctuaries" (in Italian known formally as "area marina protetta", or "marine protected area") where human activities are partially or totally limited and where dumping is strictly forbidden.

On this website you can check them and also see many beautiful pictures too!

THE BIGGEST ITALIAN LAKE

Last time I talked about saltwater, speaking about italian marine protected areas. Today I'm going to talk about freshwater with the biggest italian lake: Lake Garda. It is really close to my hometown Brescia and it's an amazing place to spend holidays, especially in summer. It's surrounded by mountains and hills and has a Mediterranean climate that allows the growth of plants like the olive tree and the lemon tree.

Speaking about fish, there is a rare salmonid fish endemic to this lake, the salmo carpio. It lives only in Lake Garda and, unfortunately, it is considered critically endangered. Other species are trout, lavaret, sardines, pike, perch.

MURANO, LAND OF GLASSMAKERS

Everybody in the world knows Venice, the city on the water, but what about Murano?

Murano is a district of Venice and it's composed by seven islands. It is famous for his very ancient art: the glass making, which has specialized in fancy glasswares for centuries.

Today, the artisans of Murano are still employing these centuries-old techniques, crafting everything from contemporary art glass and glass figurines to Murano glass chandeliers and wine stoppers, as well as tourist souvenirs.

How is Murano related to aquariums?

Well, I suggest you to write these two words on Google Images...and you will discover a world of little decorative masterpieces...handmade, of course!!

A SUPER CAR WITH AN AQUARIUM?

Today I will talk about a curiosity from the cars' world...a new kind of electric and luxurious Italian supercar, the Frangivento Asfane Charlotte Roadster, which has a real aquarium inside! This car can accelerate from 0-60 mph in under three seconds, has two seats and the passengers have the sensation to drive under the sea. The aquarium gives the feeling of depth and relax.

A prototype of this supercar made its first public debut on a special stage at the Top Marques in Monte Carlo on April 2017; next year a running model will be shown to the Salone Parco Valentino of Turin.

A NEW TROPICAL FISH IN ITALIAN SEAS

I still remember the first time I saw a lionfish: I was 13 years old and I was snorkeling with my sister in the clear Red Sea when I saw this fish swimming not too far from me. I admit that was really scary! But I also think that this fish is one of the most fascinating and elegant.

In march 2017 a lionfish has been sighted in the Vendicari marine reserve in the south-east of Sicily, the first time in Italian waters. Although I like this fish, it may be a problem because the lionfish is an invasive species that can have a devastating effect on native species once introduced outside of its native range.

Let's hope that this lionfish was just one who got lost! :)

SLOW FISH: A FISHY EXPERIENCE!

Today I will talk about an international event that takes places every two years in Genoa (the same city of the biggest Italian aquarium, remember?): Slow Fish. That's an ongoing campaign that works to protect water resources, marine ecosystems and small-scale fishing communities all around the world.

Slow Fish is dedicated to fish and marine resources, combining the pleasure of eating with good fishing practices, scientific knowledge, taste education and the protection of biodiversity.

Slow Fish took place last time in May 2017, so the next date will be in 2019. There is all the time to get ready!
